a Journalist

I LIKE TALKING TO PEOPLE. MORE IMPORTANTLY— I’M GOOD AT LISTENING.

We all rely on stories; on how they shape us and the way we define our own lives. Storytelling is an intrinsic part of how we relate to one another. It’s how I learn; how I teach. Stories are effective tools in negotiation, reconciliation, and revolution. They’re how we make friends, burn bridges, and create change. Words and the stories they create have the power to restructure our understanding of the world around us. They’re super fun to tell and extremely important to listen to (This is where I come in).

As of October 2021, I’m a Digital Multi-Skilled Journalist with CBS News Chicago. I shoot, write, edit, produce, and report on Chicago’s communities.

Multi-Skilled indeed.

ABOUT ME

I’M 24. I HAVE A FANTASTIC WARDROBE. I AM Good AT MATH.

When I was seventeen, in a tattoo shop in Shanghai, I had the map of the globe inked onto my ribcage. The thought process? I always wanted to have the world on my side. Jeez— what a sap.

ACTION NOW IS A GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION SERVING THE SOUTH + WEST SIDES OF CHICAGO. I WAS THE YOUTH ENGAGEMENT GAL.

At the beginning of Summer 2020, I accepted a fellowship to work for Action Now and chose to extend my stay as my Journalism Residency for the Fall 2020 Quarter, under the guidance of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Action Now works across Austin, North Lawndale, Auburn Gresham, Englewood, and East and West Garfield in an effort to facilitate civic engagement and empowerment— from within the community.

Action Now’s primary goals center around the preservation and rehabilitation of mental wellness and to effectively, radically, and fundamentally change the structure of the City of Chicago. My tenure concluded in December 2020.

My job as the Youth Engagement and Programming Fellow aimed to apply the values of Action Now and repurpose them to serve and support the wants and needs of  young BIPOC community members. Our collective liberation, amplification, and celebration is the praxis of my work.
